DOLLY My Life and Other Unfinished Business

By Dolly Parton

When I read a book I remove the cover. This saves the cover of the book so that it can look good on a shelf. When you remove the cover you can get a different sense of a book. “Dolly” has a beautiful cover. It’s silver and gold with her name embossed in gold on the silver cover. It’s beautiful and there is no doubt that someone put some work and care into this cover. Always remove the covers of your book and check out the book without it.

The hard boards binding the book together are not often given much thought. If Dolly actually had a hand in this design then bravo. It’s a lovely cover.

I am not a fan of country music. Sorry, I'm just not but I do recognize how important some of its stars are in pop and rock music. Is Dolly Parton one of those country music stars that crossover to become influential and even loved in the rock and pop world?

I don’t think so. She is a country artist. Dolly Parton is one of the most important women to ever emerge in country music. No one can even argue against that. Dolly is country and she is proud to be a country artist.

Dolly Parton has made her personality as legendary as her music.  Dolly’s personality shines through. She is as funny in print as she has ever been in any interview of Dolly I have ever seen.

I didn’t bother to find out what a pokeberry was but apparently, Dolly would apply a pokeberry paste to her lips and cheeks. It was her way of making herself up to be as beautiful as she felt.

This desire for beauty continued throughout her life. Makeup hair and wigs were all a part of Dolly Parton. As was plastic surgery. Dolly is not afraid to admit she has had plastic surgery. She is proud of it.

At the end of the book, Dolly includes a question-and-answer section. She asked the questions and she provided the answers.

One of the questions she asks herself is: How do you look without your hair and makeup? Her answer is “like hell”.

That’s all fine and well but then Dolly suggests that everyone should have surgery when she asks: Can you give me information about weight loss and plastic surgery? “Dolly then answers this question by giving the names of hospitals and phone numbers to call so people can have their own surgeries.”

We all know that Dolly Parton is, by now, a very much plastic creation but I have issues when she seems to give out medical advice. I actually think it’s sad that Dolly has been so concerned about looks that she has had a tremendous amount of surgeries. But generally, folks just shrug and say “That’s Dolly”.

This is all the Dolly Parton her fans could want. Like I said earlier, her personality shines through. It might be that she is loved more for her giggly, bubbly personality than her music. If that’s true, as I believe it is, then she has become more important than her music.

“There are plenty of charities for the homeless, I support those too, but isn't it time someone helped the homely?” When talking about opening a sexy lingerie store.

“Every day I count my blessings. Then I count my money”.

These are the types of things Dolly Parton fans love and will love as they go through the book. Sure Dolly is a country music legend and is as funny a country bumpkin could be.

Dolly’s book is filled with more wonderful stories. Dolly Parton fans will love her way with words and the sheer cheerfulness of her life.

Fans of Dolly Parton will simply love this book while country music fans will also grab a lot from “DOLLY”.  Otherwise, classic rock fans can pass on this.
