“Stone Alone The story of a rock and roll band” Bill Wyman with Ray Coleman
“Stone Alone The story of a rock and roll band” Bill Wyman with Ray Coleman
As I write this I'm listening to “I wanna Get Me a Gun”. It’s from Wymans’ 1974 solo album Monkey Grip.
I have just one question. What in the name of “Goats Head Soup” was Wyman thinking with this song?
And don’t get me started on that little ditty “Peanut Butter Time”. What a wasted effort.
Wyman should have just stuck to being part of the best rhythm section in rock music history.
So what about “Stone Alone”? Well, it’s named after his 1976 solo album, the one that “Peanut Butter Time” comes from, ugh. That song has truly left a bad taste in my mouth.
Let me just say that “Stone Alone” book is so much better than “Stone Alone” the album.
Ok so the book is . . . well, it’s nearly 600 flamin’ pages! 600!! And yeah sure you’re gonna find all the trials, tribulations, and travails that you could hope for in a book about the world’s greatest rock and roll band.
Bill shares some of his insight on the musical legend that is Brian Jones. Not only was Mr. Jones the man responsible for the creation of the Rolling Stones but his sexual appetite was seemingly immense.
We could have imagined Jones was not a choirboy when it came to his sexual adventures with women, not that any of the Rolling Stones could in any way be construed as choirboys sexually but Wyman refers to him as a sexual athlete.
Sex Olympics, anyone?? I’m certain there would be many, many contenders for the gold amongst rockers.
But for me, there was something much more fascinating than the stories told in the main part of the book.
Mr. Wyman seems to have kept one of the most complete diaries of anyone in the rock world, it seems that Mr. Keef was just as dedicated a journal keeper but more on that in a bit.
Appendix 2 contains a list of every show the Stones played between 1962 and 1969! Seven years of Stones tour dates!! - I did the math so you don’t have to.
This is followed by a list of all their appearances on TV and Film between 1963 and 1969! Finally, there is a list of all the radio appearances between 1963 and 1969.
This is simply an amazing document.I wonder how old Bill remembered it all. Sex, drugs, and rock and rock might have confused a few memories but not Mr. Wyman’s.
Wyman has written an invaluable reference for anyone curious about one man’s view of the life of a rock and roll star and without a doubt, Mr. William Wyman is a rock and roll star. As are many of the people he speaks of in this spectacular work.
Buy this book if you are a Rolling Stones fan.
