Amy, My Daughter by Mitch Winehouse
Amy, My Daughter by Mitch Winehouse
This is a sad story. It’s a story about a father’s love for his daughter. I know that sounds good but the father spends his time trying to help his daughter get clean from drugs. Her devoted father continues to push and try to save his daughter's life while she tries and fails to go off narcotics. Over and over again.
That’s why this is a sad story. Daddy Mitch comes across as a typical loving, devoted parent who would do whatever to his daughters’ life. Most parents would try to save their kids’ lives as he did. It’s sad to actually have to read about that happening.
There isn’t much here about her music and performances but what there are shows how drugs affected the music of Amy Winehouse and how drugs killed other music.
Her addiction killed her chance to work on the soundtrack for a James Bond movie. So drugs are bad kids. Stick to those shaken not stirred martinis.
We learn about how addiction works. We learn the lengths addicts will go to in their search for the next high. Amy Winehouse was no different. She was a junkie and alcoholic.
But, as we see in the book, she was also a loving daughter.
Now, speaking of the book . . . it wasn’t very well written. It is a quick, easy read. You could know it out in a weekend, easy.
But should you? Does this book truly shed any light on Amy Winehouse? Other than her struggles with dope and booze we get a little peek into the relationship with her daddy but not enough.
This book is almost entirely about addiction and the perseverance of a loving father. That is sad. It’s great that her father loved her but it sure seems for years his main objective in life was keeping his baby girl alive.
I’m sure he could have explored their relationship a little more deeply but we only get hints at their relationship.
It almost seems like Mitch Winehouse is trying to excise a spirit. Trying to make himself feel better about what happened with his daughter. Trying to convince himself he did everything he could for Amy.
All of this just leads to the inevitable. Amy Winehouse dies and leaves a father broken-hearted. A story so often repeated and always sad. Mr. Winehouse has a sad story to tell about his little girl, Amy.
It’s a cautionary tale about the problems of drugs and booze but not all will heed and others will die, like Amy Winehouse. 2 studio albums, and an abundance of potential gone to waste. You have to feel for Mr. Winehouse but that doesn’t make this a better book.
